Han Shan Style
During his secluded life in the Tiantai Mountains, Han Shan wrote a large number of poems on rocks, trees and walls. After his decease, the poems were collected and compiled, known as Three Hundred Poems by Han Shan.
Han Shan's poetry has distinctive features. He wrote interesting poems straight from the heart in popular or refined styles, not confining himself to poetic structures or rhythms. The fresh and elegant style of Han Shan's poems, the straightforward expressions of emotions and the spontaneous way of composing had a great influence on traditional literati. Many renowned literati, such as Wang Anshi (1021-1086), Su Dongpo (1037-1101), Huang Tingjian (1045-1105), Zhu Xi (1130-1200) and Lu You (1125-1210), were all influenced by Han Shan's poems in one way or another. The style of his poems was later called the Han Shan Style with the following features: mostly five-character lines, colloquial language, repetitive metaphors and similes, popular philosophy, and plain manner.
